Army Celebrates Vesak Commemorations

THE annual Vesak decorations organized by Sri Sambodhi Viharaya on Gregory road, Colombo 07 were declared open a couple of hours ago on Thursday (27) evening on the first day of Vesak celebrations.

These decorations, many of which have been done by the members of the Armed Forces, Police and Civil Defence Force saw Army, Navy Chiefs and Senior Air Force, Police and Civil Defence Force officers inaugurated those decorations in connection with the commencement of Vesak.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya opened the Army section of the exhibition of decorations and went on watching them. Service Chiefs and other invitees on arrival at the Temple made offerings to Buddha before inaugurating the exhibition of Vesak lanterns and decorations.

Ven. Daranagama Kusaladhamma Thero, incumbent Sri Sambodhi Viharaya headed the inauguration of the exhibition of Vesak decorations.

Meanwhile, all the Army installations across the country including Army Headquarters and those in the North and East have made elaborate arrangements to mark the sacred event after an absence of thirty years. Vesak Dansal, Supply of essentials to needy families, alms givings and various types of meritorious acts are conducted throughout the country.

In the meantime, the Army Buddhist Association organized a special programme at Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Panagoda including Dhamma preaching, a Sil campaign and veneration of the Bodhi on Vesak Day.
