ARMY BOXERS who took part in the Men and Women’s Amateur Boxing Tournament conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka performed exceptionally well.
The tournament was conducted for three days (June 5-8) at Royal College, Army boxers displayed excellent power boxing and dominated proceedings throughout the tournament.
Army Men secured six Gold Medals out of 10 which could be considered a major achievement as there were a record number of entries (162) this year, fielded by Navy, Air Force, Police, Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (appearing for the first time) and clubs such as the YMCA, Nugegoda Boxing Club, Vidyartha Sports Club, Kandy, Vidyarathana Sports Club Horana, St Mathew’s Boxing Club, St Aloysius Rathnapura, Maharagama Boxing Club and the club attached to MAS Holdings.
Remaining Golds were shared by Navy 01, Slimline 01 and Linia BC 02. In addition to six Gold Medals, Army Boxers won two Silvers and seven Bronzes.
Army Women boxers also performed well collecting three Golds out of eight, one Silver and two Bronze.
