Armoured Corps Boxers Display their Skills

The Inter Unit Boxing Tournament of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) had its finals at the Army Headquarters new indoor stadium on Tuesday (23) evening.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army in his capacity as Colonel Commandant SLAC witnessed the final encounter as the Chief Guest along with Major General M.P Peiris, Vice Chancellor, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and several other senior officers.

The Inter Unit Boxing Tournament 2010, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps had its bouts for two days under 49, 52, 56, 60, 64, 69, 75 and 91 categories, including Light Welter Weight, Light Weight, Bantam Weight, Exhibition Bout, Fly Weight and Light Fly Weight before the finals were staged.

Two Exhibition Bouts of women and men added colour to the occasion after Light Weight and Bantam Weight Boxers had a tough tussle for supremacy amidst cheering and applause.

Lance Corporal H.M.I.S Herath (8 SLAC) emerged the overall championship in the tournament. Lance Corporal D.M.J Wijesundara (49 kg category), Lance Corporal H.M.I.S Herath of 8 SLAC (52 kg category), Private K.G Janaka (56 kg category), Lance Corporal D.S.L Perera (60 kg category), Private W.K.S Silva (64 kg category), Private A.N Premaratne (69 kg category), Private K.M.S Udaya Kumara (75 kg category) and Lance Corporal M.M Eranga (91 kg category) secured the first place in their respective encounters.

The exhibition bouts were coloured by Lance Corporal M.V.G.C.S Bandara (Engineer Services Regiment), Private W.A.C.I Perera (Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps), Lance Corporal P.K Sumudu (Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps) and Lance Corporal S.D.N.S Karunaratne. Private A.R Jayawardane (9 SLAC) was the best loser in the tournament.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya gave away colours and certificates to the winners in the tournament.
