Troops of the 9th Battalion of the Gajaba Regiment under the 622 Brigade at Kiriibbanwewa on Thursday (7) carried out a 'Shramadana' (self-help) drive to completely clean the Kiriibbanwewa “D” canal alias Goda Sorouwa which is 1.5 km in length to facilitate farmers for carriage of water during the Maha season.
On the instructions of the General Officer Commanding, 62 Division, Major General Upali Gunasekara, troops threw their weight behind the project.
The aforesaid programme was organized, together with forty 9 GR troops.
16 Buddhist monks from Kiriibbanwewa Darma Pradeepa Pirivena, Grama Niladari of Kiriibbanwewa, Unit Manager of Mahaweli Authority - Kiriibbanwewa, Project Engineer - Mahaweli L Zone, 40 x members from the local farmers' society in Kiriibbanwewa and villagers contributed to the cleaning project.
