6th Defence Services Games Declared Open

The annual 6th Defence Services Games was officially declared open by Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunathilake President, Defence Services Sports Board (DSSB), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force Friday (03) evening at Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo.

Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunathilake, accompanied by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe was warmly welcomed by the Secretary, to the Games Committee and conducted to the special dais. Tri Forces Commanders and the Secretary of the Games Committee hosted the National flag along with the Tri Forces flags before the National Anthem was aired.

DSSB President and the Commanders were afterwards escorted to the upper VIP Grand Stand while the brass band was playing background music, followed by a two-minute silence in memory of the fallen War Heroes.

Sky Divers and Parachutists jumping from the skies at Sugathadasa stadium and added glamor to the event as more than 1200 athletes representing tri forces paraded the stadium track. Games Torch bearers jogged along the track up to the Games Torch and the lighting of the Games Torch was done to the tunes of sounding drums.

Chairman, Defence Services Games 2010 Organizing Committee delivered his welcome speech which was followed by the official declaration of the opening of the Defence Services Games 2010 by the Chief Guest. Athletes from tri services took the oath to participate in the Games, adhering to the norms and traditions of the game and maintaining the true sportsmanship which was followed by the oath of the officials.

Cultural troupes representing tri services displayed dances and cultural pageants entertaining those who were present. A colourful display of fireworks marked the end of the day’s event.
