65 Division's Initiative Releases Record Stock of Fingerlings for Income Generation

The 65 Division HQ in Alankulam with a view to supporting the fisher community and generating extra income, needed for their livelihoods, took steps to release a record stock of 285,000 freshwater fingerlings into Vavunikulam, Thenniyankulam, and Therankandal tanks during 29-30 August with the patronage of the National Aquatic and Development Authority in Killinochchi and the Inland Fisheries Unit in the Northern Provincial Council.

Major General Prasad Edirisinghe, General Officer Commanding, 65 Division having found that large groups of fishermen in above areas have been badly affected due to prevailing economic crisis without adequate income sources, coordinated with relevant authorities to receive those stocks of fingerlings.

10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 17 Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops and the office of the Civil Affairs in the 65 Division HQ organized the release of those fingerlings into respective tanks as per directions of government authorities and Commanding Officers.

The General Officer Commanding, 65 Division graced the inauguration of the project as the Chief Guest along with several Officers. Ms A. Ladumeera, Divisional Secretary of Thunnukkai, Ms Abhirami Baramurali, Director of the Inland Fisheries Unit, Northern Provincial Council, Mr Kumar Sangeetham, Director of Northern Province's Ceylon National Aquaculture Development Authority, Mr Mariyadas Maryuru, Assistant Divisional Secretary of Manthai East, Mr Prakash, Regional Irrigation Engineer, Mallavi and several state officials participated in the inaugural project.
