Oddusudan-based 64 Infantry Division under Security Forces Headquarters, Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) with a view to fostering civil military relations in the area continues to conduct various community-oriented projects.
The most recent medical clinic and the exhibition at the Oddusudan School premises with the participation of the medical faculty of University of Kelaniya, Department of Agriculture, National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), Department of Archaeology, Army Commandos, Army Cultural troupe and the band attracted thousands of civilians, students, religious leaders, state officials and others in Mullaittivu area.
On the instructions of the SFHQ-MLT Brigadier H.W.S.D.B Pananwala, General Officer Commanding 64 Infantry Division, launched the above programme for two days.
The project, aimed at imparting knowledge on gender equality, exchange of knowledge, improvement of hygienic standards, promotion of community spirits, etc was attended by Major General L.B.R Mark, Commander, SFHQ-MLT, District Secretary for Mullaittivu and Assistant Divisional Secretary for Oddusudan as distinguished invitees.
Meanwhile, the same Infantry Division on three separate occasions in December, last year distributed a large stock of push bicycles, school accessories and other essentials among civilians and hundreds of Oddusudan students.
On account of Christmas, 250 umbrellas and 219 sets of school accessories were distributed among low-income group families and students during a brief ceremony at Kulamurippu church under the auspices of the parish priest.
On 22 December 2012, a stock of 150 push bicycles, donated to the 64 Division by a foreign organization were given away to selected families in the area during a brief ceremony. On the same day, students from Oddusudan received 500 school bags as donations, following an initiative taken by the 64 Division.
Those community oriented projects are expected to further promote understanding and reconciliation among different communities, civil and military sector administrators. General Officer Commanding 64 Division plans to launch identical projects in the future too.
