The 58 Division 'GOC’s Challenge Trophy' in Inter Battalion Battle Obstacle Competition 2020 organized to provide an opportunity for Officers and Other Ranks of under command battalions to showcase their skills in strengthening physical standards and confidence of the troops got underway on Sunday (27) December 2020 at the obstacle belt in the APTS, Panagoda in the presence of Major General Priyanka Fernanado, General Officer Commanding 58 Division as the Chief Gust and Brigadier Srinath Ariyasinghe, Director General Infantry, AHQ as the Special Guest of Honour.
The Chief Guest of the event was warmly welcomed by Colonel Kavinda Balasooriya, Commander 582 Brigade, together with 581 and 582 Brigade Commanders.
The competition was competed by 6 teams, made of one officer and nine Other Ranks, representing 1 SLLI, 1 SLSR, 1 GW, 9 GW, 5VIR and 6 VIR who vied in the competition against their fellow- competitors. Comprised of 18 obstacles, the competition mirrored the enthusiasm soldiers have in running 1-mile and crossing an array of different obstacles in the competition completing required standards.
1 SLSR with 1800 marks (Full marks) was declared the heir to the Championship in the competition while 6 VIR with 1080 marks was adjudged the Runner-up. The colourful awarding ceremony of trophies to the winning teams was conducted with the special guest of honour and the GOC.
The special guest of honour of the event, Brigadier Srinath Ariyasinghe afterwards in his speech highlighted the importance of training in encouraging the troops to reach such an opportunity in order to enhance capability of the soldier. He stressed that he would direct all the infantry divisions to conduct similar competition in their divisions too. Further, he thanked the GOC 58 Division for inviting him as the special guest of honour at the ceremony.
Next, the brainchild behind the competition, Major General Priyanka Fernando spoke out his mind and stressed the importance of conducting competition in this nature, associated with core values and assessment of the soldier’s physical and mental agility to overcome ever changing battlefield challenges as an efficient force. He extended his special appreciation to the organizing committee wishing all competitors the best of luck.
