551 Brigade Troops Pocket Out Own Money to Build House for Needy Family

Spending their own money and labour, 10 (Volunteer) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) troops, serving the 551 Brigade Headquarters, built a new house for a low-income group family in Nagarkovil East, Jaffna area after their plight was brought to the notice.

Army troops collected a sum of Rs 50,060/= from their own fellow-soldiers for this worthy cause and started constructing the new house, offering their own labour and expertise. The family with nine members was living in a hut, thatched with old tin sheets and the place needed urgent attention.

Troops after completing the construction handed it over to the needy family on Monday (25) during a ceremony, headed by Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, Commander, 55 Division.

Rev Thawarasa, Hindu Priest, Mr P. Kanagamurthi, Administrative officer, Marudankerni Divisional Secretariat, Mr Thomas Jude, Gramaseva Niladhari, Mr Shivagnanam, Chairman, Fishermen’s Society and several senior officers were associated with the house-warming ceremony.
