Army troops serving 54 Division in Mannar area rushed and helped contain a fast spreading fire which gutted about 35 temporary shops in Mannar town on Thursday (1) during small hours.
Army troops with water bowsers and other water carrying tanks on the instructions of Brigadier M.A.M Dias, General Officer Commanding, 54 Division rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control with the support of civilians who came to the spot during the early hours on Thursday (1).
The fire completely destroyed 35 temporary shops and partly damaged about 20 more but was contained before it spread to the adjacent Municipal Council building and a few more key constructions in the centre of the town.
Public in the area commended the Army for its quick action and timely intervention on being informed of the fire that was catching those temporary line of shops and stalls.
