30th Death Anniversary of Lt Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa Commemorated

Grateful fellow-military personnel, veterans and people of Sri Lanka on Monday (8) paid tribute to the memory of one of the colossal and finest contemporary War Heroes, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa on his 30th death anniversary during a major ceremony at sacred Anurdhapura which remained close to his heart when he was alive.

Monday’s main ceremony at the life-size statue of late War Hero got to a start soon after arrival of Major General Jagath Kodithuwakku, Chief of Staff at the location as the Chief Guest.

Amid solemn beats of the Army band, the day’s Chief Guest laid the first floral wreath and saluted his golden memory before the formal military honours were presented. Family members of fallen Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, retired war veterans, Military Secretary, Commander Security Forces - Wanni, General Officer Commanding, 21 Division, 212 Brigade Commander, Senior Officers, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps Officers and Other Ranks joined the commemorative ceremony.

A gathering of civilians closely watched the proceedings and paid their respect to the fallen warrior.

Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa whose leadership and command brought about many victories to Sri Lanka Army during early battles of the Eelam wars, fell silent on 8th August 1992 along with fellow-military veterans, Major General Wijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G. H. Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C. B. Wijepura and the soldier, Private W J Wickremasinghe while they were on a military assignment in Araly Point, Kayts, Jaffna.

Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa’s Regiment, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), had its own commemorative arrangements.
