Troops serving 222 Brigade area under 22 Division in Jayanthigama, Kantale with the view to further fostering relations between Security Forces and different ethnicities initiated a series of community-oriented social service projects beginning the first week of April, the month of Sinhala and Hindu New Year.
Twenty poverty-struck families in Jayanthigama, Kantale received 20 gift packets, containing dry rations, spices, milk powder as a result of a donation, made by a donor in Colombo. Each packet, valued at about Rs 3500/= was delivered to those civilians during a meeting at Sri Jayabodhi temple after coordination was made by 222 Brigade civil affairs officer.
Just a couple of hours later on the same day (April 11), 222 Brigade troops donated 20 Asbesto roofing sheets for the use of sports stadium under construction at Rantharu sports club grounds in Jayanthigama, Kantale area.
Meanwhile, all 222 Brigade officers and other ranks joined hands together and conducted several Sinhala and Hindu New Year festivals, giving prominence to a variety of traditional and fun-making events. They took place at Jayanthigama Rantharu sports club grounds and Kantale Agrabodhi Vidyalaya play ground during two separate days. Army troops added colour and amusement to these festivals providing music towards the end of both events.
Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, Commander 222 Brigade Headquarters and General Officer Commanding (overlooking) 22 Division Headquarters, Trincomalee, who directed the troops to make those events a huge success, attended these festivals as the chief guest, together with a number of senior officers and other ranks.
