185 kgs of Smuggled Cannabis, Worth Over Rs 55.7 m Taken into Custody

Intelligence troops of the 54 Division in Mannar on information received, early this morning (20) detected 185.575 kgs of smuggled Kerala Cannabis (Ganja) in 86 packs to the value of Rs 55.7 million from a beachside scrubland, close to the seas at Pallikuda, Pooneryn.

Initial information received by Intelligence troops confirmed that a haul of Cannabis would be smuggled from India to Vidathalathivu shore area on fishing boats, but the smugglers had kept their landing locations changing since Security Forces in Mannar remain alert to their clandestine operations.

However, troops accordingly adjusted their operational tactics and moved to Vidathalathivu shore and launched a search operation around the boat landing points to find the concealed consignment of Cannabis, kept inside a nearby scrubland.

Troops recovered those 86 packs of Cannabis to the value of Rs 55.7 m from the nearby thicket and handed over the stock to the STF personnel at Kilinochchi for further investigations. However, no arrests were made.

During the first four months in this year in the Army troops have been active in detecting smuggled Cannabis, turmeric and drugs as per directions of the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.
