Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) of the Army in parallel with its 139th anniversary which fell on 1 April 2020 promoted a record 1785 Other Ranks to their next respective ranks, effective from the same date (1) with the blessings of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva and the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Jagath Gunawardena.
In view of the COVID-19 epidemic in the country, the scheduled customary SLAVF 139th anniversary programmes had to be suspended.
Nevertheless, Major General Jagath Gunawardena on the anniversary day (1) unveiled a plaque and opened a 55-type middle-size Armour Tank, placed on display in the premises to mark the SLAVE's 139th birthday. This tank, manned by SLAVF personnel during Wanni Humanitarian Operations provided a notable assistance to the fighting troops. Afterwards, Major General Gunawardene planted a sapling in the premises to mark the event in the presence of a few Officers and Other Ranks.
The origin of the volunteer movement was founded on 1st April as “The Ceylon Volunteers”. Later, it became “The Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers” and subsequently evolved into be a great organization with over 55000 troops under 82 Volunteer Battalions of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. Since its inception, it has been extending its contribution to the Nation both during war and peace.
The SLAVF Commandant extended his best wishes and congratulations to all members of the organization on the 139th anniversary of the SLAVF.
