16 SLSR Troops in 561 Brigade Assist Restore Train Movement in North Alankulam

16 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops of the 561 Brigade of the 56 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) swiftly moved towards the Alankulam railway track area and cleared the carcass of an elephant, run over by the Colombo-bound express train from KKS at about 5.30 am on Sunday (9).

The carcass torn into pieces after the express train knocked down the elephant has however dragged the train along about 400 m away from the point of the crash, causing derailment for two wheels of the train engine.

16 SLSR battalion troops attended to the immediate removal of the torn carcass, stuck beneath the 3rd carriage after chopping it into pieces with a chain-saw and enabled railway technicians to restore the movement of the derailed engine. The effort was supported by Police STF troops, Wildlife Department staff, Railway Department staff and civilians in the area.

Troops after restoration of the train movement by about 1.10 pm in the same afternoon formally handed over remaining body parts of the ill-fated elephant to the Wildlife Department in accordance with legal provisions for onward arrangements.

Commander, Security Forces – Wanni, Major General Dhammika Jayasinghe, 56 Division’s General Officer Commanding and the 561 Brigade Commander coordinated and closely supervised the emergency requirement. Sports News | Men’s shoes
