121 Brigade Soldiers Try Their Best to Rescue a Drowning Youth


Officers and other rankers of Moneragala-based 121 Brigade of the 12 Division of the Security Force Headquarters-Central (SFHQ-C), swiftly responded to an SOS telephone call on Thursday (19) evening and recovered the remains of a youth who had drowned in Kumbukkanoya.

The telephone message at about 6.00 p.m. alerted the troops who are close to the Kumbukkanoya, a popular bathing spot in Moneragala area to the sudden drowning of the private bus conductor, Sameera Sampath (25) of Moneragala.

Officers and about 20 other rankers of the 121 Brigade Headquarters ran to the spot within 15 minutes of the tragedy before everyone after the SOS message as people in the area as well as policemen began reaching the place.

Several Army personnel and about 2-3 men immediately dived into the gushing water and started searching for the victim. Finally, Army divers found the victim, trapped inside a rocky mound, about 15 feet down under water, although Army personnel after taking him out, tried resuscitating first aid practices before he was taken to Sirigala, Moneragala hospital.

Later on, the Police who took the victim to the hospital confirmed the Army of his death before he was taken there.
