‘Vijayabahu Motorcross - 2012’, the sporting pride of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) got underway at Boyagane VIR Headquarters complex tracks on Sunday (11) to a packed crowd of more than 25000 - 30000 sport enthusiasts and motor racing fans.
The 10th Vijayabahu Motorcross in the country’s most difficult track with fourteen bends, two double jumps and four single jumps, for the first time in its history honoured an incumbent Army Chief dedicating a trophy to the name of "Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Championship Trophy".
The exciting event, organized by VIR Regimental Headquarters was held in collaboration with Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDR). Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB).
On arrival at the venue, the Chief Guest was received by Major General R.V. Samarathunge, Colonel of the Regiment and other senior officers. Accompanying Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch was welcomed by Mrs Preethi Samarathunga, chairperson VIR Seva Vanitha Unit.
Flag hoisting ceremony that followed symbolized the onset of the much-awaited thrill as the packed crowd and their enthusiasm was fast swelling. The Chief Guest hoisted the Army flag, Colonel of the Regiment the VIR flag and SLARDR's Chairman Mr Upali Dassanayake, the Motor racing flag.
The year's most exciting and thrilling experience on the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) calendar included 14 events with the participation of over 80 veterans in the field of motor-racing, like Ananda Wedisinghe, C. Ishan Dissanayake, K.P Aravind (India), Pradeep HK (India) et al who vied for the Championship in the motor racing. It was organized in association with the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association (SLARDR).
Major racing events included Racing up to 85cc (Under 13), Racing up to 125cc 2 stroke, Novices up to 125cc, Racing up to 85cc (Under 16), Racing up to 125cc 2 stroke / 250cc 4 stroke, Racing up to 50cc (Kids Under 10), Racing up to 85cc (Under 16), Street Trail up to 125cc, Racing up to 50cc (Under 10), Racing up to 125cc 2 stroke & 250cc 4 stroke, Street Trail up to 250cc, Racing Open Arms person, Over 85cc above (age over 40 Open), Racing Open and several other competitions, exclusively for children below 16 years.
The winner in the Open Competition received a 3ft tall Colonel Commandant Challenging Trophy in addition to cash prizes, presented to each separate category.
Shehan Adhikari carried away the inducting Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Championship Trophy and Gayan Sandaruwan won the Colonel Commandant Challenging Trophy in the open competition category. Both trophies at the end of the day's encounter were presented to the winners by the Chief Guest, Commander of the Army.
‘The VIR Motor Cross’ since its inauguration in 2000 has lavishly contributed towards Army welfare and rehabilitation projects, meant for disable VIR War Heroes, families of fallen War Heroes and all the War Heroes in general.
While contributing to popularizing motorcross as a sport in the country, the Colonel Commandant VIR at the same occasion donated a sum of Rs 5.2 million towards the ‘Abimansala’ project at Kamburupitiya, now in progress for rest and recreation of the disable War Heroes. Mrs Jayasuriya acknowledged the gesture Mrs Preethi Samarathunge amid cheering.
