The opening session of the Day 2 (19 Aug) of the ‘Defence Seminar - 2014’ under the sub theme ‘National Security’, presided by Major General Milinda Peiris, saw Major General Udaya Perera making his presentation on the need of ‘A Land Force Doctrine to Meet New Demands to Secure and Further an Island Nation’s Interests,’ in which he identified several important areas of concern for evolution .......
The ongoing ‘Defence Seminar - 2014’ sessions on Tuesday (19) morning accommodated Sri Lanka Navy’s contributor, Rear Admiral D.C Gunawardena’s views on the theme, ‘Security Challenges Faced by an Island Nation in Pursuit of a Maritime Hub’ in the panel, chaired by Major General Milinda Peiris.
Spelling out the need to explore possibilities of reaching the maximum potentials in the sky as one of the main hubs on the road to development, Air Vice Marshal K.V.B Jayampathy, presenting his observations to the panel discussion on ‘Ensuring a Secure & Safe Airspace in Pursuit of Sri Lanka’s Ambition to Become the Aviation Hub of the Region,’ at the ongoing ‘Defence Seminar’ sessions announced.......
Adding a civilian but a scholarly perspective to the ‘Defence Seminar’ sessions of the day (19), Dr. D. Suba Chandran, Director, Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, New Delhi, India commenting on the ‘Indian Perspective of Sri Lanka’s Pursuit of Prosperity’ spoke in length how civilian ‘expectations’ be transformed to be realities.
Ambassador Arif Ayub from Pakistan and Ms Mariam Safi from Afghanistan, delivering their presentations to the Session 2 of the ‘Defence Seminar - 2014’ on Tuesday (19), enlightened the audience as regards the status quo in both those countries and examined possibilities for restoration of infrastructure and civil participatory roles that can be applied to both nations.
Elaborating on Sri Lanka’s prospects of emerging as a nation, markedly with further expansion of bilateral and multilateral trade, Sri Lanka’s economy, etc, Mr Patryk Kugiel, Senior Researcher, Polish Institute of International Affairs, Warsaw, Poland maintained that the momentum of growth, has to be further promoted while increasing export trade with the EU.
The inaugural sessions of the Defence Seminar - 2014, themed on ‘Sri Lanka: Challenges to a Rising Nation’ got to a start Monday (18) morning at Colombo Galadari Hotel amidst a packed audience of scholars, intellectuals, policy makers and military leaders, drawn from more than 50 countries, including diplomats based here.
“While we have defeated the LTTE in Sri Lanka, the organization, its ideology and its operations are very much alive in a number of western countries. Immediately, this remains a challenge to speeding up the pace of reconciliation in Sri Lanka, and eventually, a potent danger to Sri Lanka as a rising nation,” so observed Mr Ravinath Aryasinha, Ambassador / Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva, Consul General of Sri Lanka to Switzerland.........
