The annual Vesak commemoration in Jaffna ‘Yapa Patunai-Dhaham Amavai 2014’, organized by the troops serving the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J), is to get underway during May 14-20. The decorative arrangements include a pandol of 60,000 electric lights, decorations, free eating houses and different colourful events. Organizers expect large crowds of sight-seers during the period.

A professional training programme, designed to educate non-commissioned officers (NCOs) on spiritual advancement, biodiversity and indigenous farming, commenced last week at the Army Vocational Training School at Kalaoya. ‘Barber service’, provided by Periyawadduwan-based 12 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) soldiers serving 232 Brigade of the 23 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), went to Kanchankuda school, Pottuvil last week. As part of developing child health care in the area, the Army barber team shaved hair of more than 20 school students in Kanchakuda school as most of them come from needy families.

A workshop that educates Army officers on dangers of drugs, drug addiction, use of drugs, prevention from drugs, etc, got underway at Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) auditorium for two days (May 7 - 9). Organized by the Directorate of Psychological Operations of the Army Headquarters, the two-day workshop was coordinated by Dangerous Drug Prevention National Board.
