Seventy-four Former Tigers Volunteer for Rehabilitation

MULLAITTIVU: AFTER three days of heavy gun battles, soldiers of 53 and 58 Divisions and TF-VIII captured the entire PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU area, the last base station of the LTTE terrorists this morning (5). Troops confirmed that LTTE leaders GADAFI, NAGESH, THEEPAN, DURGA, VIDUSHA and the leader of LTTE artillery wing, MANIWANNAN were killed while BANU was critically injured during those gun battles.
AMPARA: SUPERINTENDENT of Police (SP) Mr. H.L. JAMALDEEN fell victim to unidentified gunmen, suspected to be LTTE infiltrators, Sunday (5) evening around 7.30 p.m. in the general area of MARATHAMUNAI in KALMUNAI, AMPARA. The Senior Police Officer was returning after evening prayers at the MARATHAMUNAI mosque when he was fired upon causing instant death. SP JAMALDEEN was holding the senior appointment of Deputy Director at the KALLADY Police Training School in BATTICOLOA at the time he fell victim to suspected LTTE gunmen.

MULLAITTIVU: FIVE more LTTE leaders were among the senior terrorists killed during confrontations in PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU north area Sunday (5). Leader of LTTE’s "RADHA Regiment" SEELAMBARASAN, his deputy ANBU, the terrorist in charge of mortar section GOPAL, the terrorist in charge of mine section, ASMI and another leader of LTTE’s "SODIA Regiment", MOHANA were confirmed killed in the gun battles.
A TEAM of Tamil Diaspora, professionals from all walks of life, from nine countries including Canada, Australia, UK, Denmark, Switzerland, France and Germany were in Sri Lanka on a fact finding mission last week. The visit took place on the initiative of the Australia based Tamils. They visited IDP camps in Vavunia as well as the Ambepussa rehabilitation centre for ex-LTTE cadres. They also met Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP in Colombo and expressed their concerns over the trapped civilians. Here is an interview with some members of this delegation....
MULLAITTIVU: TROOPS in VISUAMADU and MULLAITTIVU areas confronted pockets of LTTE terrorists on Sunday (5) as troops were concentrating on the final clearing operations surrounding the No Fire Zone in PUTHUKUDIRIPPU. Fourteen terrorists including six females lost their lives during those confrontations. Troops later on collected those dead bodies, thirteen T-56 weapons, one I-com set, one satellite phone, four Arul bombs, four hand grenades, one claymore mine, one Global Positioning System (GPS), one Bajaj Boxer motor bike, one LMD Freedom 110 motor bike and one 1.5 KVA generator.

THE key to victory or defeat is the human terrain. It is not capturing territory or defeating terrorism. Military, law enforcement and intelligence services cannot end conflicts. They can create the right conditions for political, community, and business leaders and other visionaries to become effective. Even while military operations are going on in the island nation, it is essential to take certain steps to politically, socially and economically consolidate the victory. In addition to politically empowering Tamils, government should socially consolidate and economically develop the northeast.....
