  • Former LTTE Child Combatants Turn Girl Guides & Boy Scouts

    INCREDIBLE, yet it is true and deserves our praise and blessings. Out of 198 LTTE child combatants receiving rehabilitation under Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation (BCGR), Ministry of Justice & Law Reforms, a total of 40 boys and 38 girls were invested as Boys Scouts and Girl Guides during a recent ceremony while they still continue to receive school education at Ratmalana Hindu College. Those 38 girls and 40 boys of 14-16 years of age who had been conscripted or forcibly detained by LTTE terrorists before last year’s end of the War for Peace in Wanni, successfully completed basic training on scouting, as recommended and trained by Sri Lanka Scouts Association.

  • Traffic Arrangements for Victory Day Rehearsals

    POLICE headquarters informs motorists that the Galle Face road will be closed for traffic from 6 am to 2 pm from May 13 to 19 in view of the parade rehearsals for the Victory Day celebrations to be held at Galle Face on May 20. Accordingly, all buses and heavy vehicles will be diverted from the Kollupitiya junction to proceed up to the Pittala junction from where they could turn left and proceed through Slave Island to Pettah. All light vehicles can proceed up to the Galle Face roundabout and proceed along Macan Markar road to Slave Island from where they could turn left and proceed to Pettah.


  • War Hero's Son Pins First Flag on President Inaugurating War Hero Week

    HIS EXCELLENCY, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, officially inaugurating the ‘War Heroes Week’ (May 11 - 20), precursor to this year’s final National Victory Day (20) ceremony, received the first commemorative Ranaviru Flag at Temple Trees on Tuesday (11) in the presence of Ministers, Secretary Defence, Provincial Governors, Provincial Secretaries, Ranaviru Seva Authority officials, senior tri-service officers and a host of other invitees. The Government after declaring May 18 as the National Victory Day has decided to commemorate the supreme sacrifices made by War Heroes throughout the week beginning May 11. However, the grand culminating National Victory Day for this year will be held on May 20 at Galle Face greens, giving pride of place to military spectacles.

  • VIR Builds 45 Houses & Handed Over

    WITH the support of land owners and religious leaders in the area, troops belonging to 11 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), 3 (V) VIR and 12 (V) VIR under Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna, (SFHQ-J) have completed the construction of 45 new houses for IDP returnees at Chavakachcheri, Kaithady and Nunavil areas under the SFHQ-J initiated 680 house programme. All houses constructed by troops within a matter of few weeks under the supervision of the General Officer Commanding 52 Division were handed over to the recipients recently during brief ceremonies. 

  • Army Athletes Show Colours in Annual Marathon

    Sri Lanka Army, pioneers in producing a wide assortment of athletes of both national and international standards, had its annual inter regimental marathon run on Sunday (9) with the participation of 121 runners drawn from fifteen regiments across the country. Sri Lanka Army Athletic Association, chaired by Major General Daya Ratnayake, Chief of Staff organized this marathon run for the 45th consecutive year after it had been officially inaugurated in the year 1951.

  • Tributes Paid to War Heroes in Kilinochchi

    A GROUP of twenty-five disable War Heroes and their families were symbolically honoured and their dedication lauded during another provincial War Hero commemoration ceremony at Kilinochchi Thursday (13) morning. Thursday’s (13) ceremony at newly-erected Kilinochchi War Hero victory monument was attended by a host of government officials and tri-service and Police personnel.   • Army Tae Kwondo Players Carry Away Championship

    Ten Gold medals, nine Silver medals and seven Bronze medals were won by Army Tae Kwondo players, in addition to the overall Championship (senior section) clinched by them during the two-day Korean Trophy Tae Kwondo Tournament, held at Maharagama National Youth Council auditorium. The tournament, sponsored by International Agency for Korean Aid and Korean Embassy was competed by players in Sri Lanka Army, Police, Special Task Force and many island-wide players in different sports associations.

  • Second 'Mahilchi Illam' for Psycho-social Promotion of Children Opened at Nadankandal

    THE SECOND Psycho-social Development Centre “Mahilchi Illam” (Happiness Centre) in the North, constructed using a  share of the proceeds collected from an Army organized musical evening was declared open on Sunday (9) at Pandiyankulam Maha Vidyalaya, Nadankandal in Manthe East division. Major General Kamal Gunaratne, Commander, Security Forces, Wanni and Competent Authority for IDPs, amidst a gathering of excited school children, teachers and villagers, ceremonially opened the second of its kind in the entire north.
