  • Commander presents permanent appointment letters to Army Civil Staff before the New Year celebration gets under way

    THE SYMBOLIC presentation of permanent appointment letters to members of the civil staff in the Army occurred this morning (23) at Army Headquarters under the auspices of Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Commander of the Army. A total of 3500 members of the civil staff serving in the sphere of cooking, cleaning and minor-staff duties who hitherto remained as casual labourers and employees in the Army were to accordingly receive permanency in their jobs with pension rights.

    SECURITY Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ-W) celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on a grand scale giving priority for traditional sports events under the patronage of the Wanni Security Forces Commander and Competent Authority for IDP Welfare Major General Kamal Gunarathne. The occasion was also attended by senior Army officers serving in the region adding more ecstasy and strength to their fellow-men.

    A BABY pachyderm, stuck in the mud at Uraniya lagoon, close to Komari, Pottuvil had the rare chance of surviving, thanks to the timely intervention of 16 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) soldiers who were serving the area. Soldiers in the area after they were alerted by two fishermen to the effect that this tiny pachyderm, perhaps having lost its way in the jungles has finally either fallen into the lagoon by accident or gone for drinking water as the dusk was falling fast.
