Army comes forward to help family

The 60ft -deep drinking water well in the general area of Vadaliyadappu, Jaffna remains as mysterious as ever before after it took the life of the seven year old Yasodaran Vishwalingam on Sunday (22) while his parents were out. The well remained unprotected and used by several families in the premises. Beloved mother Ganeshwari, who was out of home for purchase of some daily needs did not know the fate befell his darling idol who was playing outside home until some of his friends came home, seeking whereabouts of their school-mate on that fateful day.


Army chief visits Wanni & Mannar

DIRECTORATE OF MOVEMENT ENTERS NEW OFFICE WING

A dilapidated wing of the Brtish-made Army Headquarters complex at Colombo, renovated by Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) within a short span of two months, was officially handed over to the Directorate of Movement (D Move) at a brief function held this afternoon (23 June 2004).


A Claymore Mine Recovered

BATTICALOA: ARMY TROOPS ON A ROUTE CLEARING patrol recovered a claymore mine (2.5Kg), one electric detonator and a five meter long flexible wire around 11.15 a.m. on Thursday (22) in CHENKALADY. The Army Bomb Disposal Team defused the claymore mine after SLMM visited the scene. The ERAVUR Police are conducting investigations.


A HAND Grenade Recovered By the Police

BATTICALOA: POLICE PERSONNEL ON DUTY AT THE JAYANTHIPURA Police post recovered a hand grenade (Type SFG 87) when they arrested a person named MARIYANAGAM SAHAYARAJA (24) suspected to be a LTTE terrorist. The BATTICALOA Police are conducting investigations.


LTTE Directs Small Arms Fire At A Route Clearing Patrol

JAFFNA: LTTE FIRED SMALL ARMS AT TROOPS during a route clearing patrol around 5.30.p.m. at PASIYOOR on Thursday (22). Troops returned fire at the fleeing LTTE terrorists. Troops conducted a cordon and search operation in the area.


‘Poson’ attracts many thousands in Jaffna

Lighting of 84,000 coconut oil lamps, recital of devotional songs, display of colourful and creative lanterns became the magnificent spectacle for thousands of Jaffna civilians on Poson Day (21) who thronged Naga Vihara and the grounds at Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna to commemorate arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
