Artillery and Women Corps grab Championships

Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery swept the board in the recent Inter Regiment Athletic Meet of the Sri Lanka Army, Volunteer Force (SLAVF)-2005 at Sugathadasa Stadium.

Eighteen teams of males from volunteer regiments and four teams of females from Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (SLAWC) vied with each other to secure championship making a series of new records during the four- day long Meet.

Major General N. Mallawaarachchi, Commandant SLAVF declared opened the first day meet champions of the Meet, Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) and runners-up Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) respectively displayed excellent sports skills throughout the meet.

2 SLAWC emerged Champions in the female events but the 3 SLAWC after a stiff competition emerged the runner up.

The Award for the Best Male Athlete went to Lance Bombardier W.R.L Weerakkody of 12 SLA and Lance Corporal M.D.P. Wickramasinghe from 3 SLAWC won the award for the Best Female Athlete.

It was also the SLA, which won the Cup in the tug-of-war offering the second place for SLNG.

Lieutenant General S.H.S. Kottegoda, Commander of the Army graced the award ceremony at the final day at Sugathadasa Stadium where colours for winners were distributed.

Major General Sarath Fonseka, Chief of Staff and Major General N.M.B. Amunugama, Deputy Commandant SLAVF also participated.
