UK General Rose calls on Defence Minister and Security Defence

UK General Sir Michael Rose KCB CBE DSO QGM (Retd), now a reputed writer and widely traveled lecturer on 'Peace-keeping' during a brief visit to Sri Lanka recently, paid courtesy calls on Minister of Defence Hon. Thilak Marapana and the Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. L. P Balagalle RWP RSP VSV USP ndc IG.

General Rose, accompanied by his wife Angela Rose, held talks with Defence Minister Hon. Thilak Marapana and Defence Secretary Austin Fernando where they exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. Sri Lanka's Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. L. P Balagalle, Former Defence Secretary Cyril Ranatunga and Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri VSV USP ndc rcds psc MSc (DS) Fimgt were also associated with this meeting at the Defence Minister's office.

Gen. Rose's experiences in the process of peace-building and leadership, hailed by a wide variety of media and audiences, cover Bosnia-Herzegovina where Gen. Rose commanded the UN Protection Force Command in 1994.

A product of Sorbonne and Oxford universities, Gen. Rose was awarded a Honorary Doctorate (Litt) by Nottingham University in 1999 after he was named an honorary fellow of his College at Oxford. Having joined the US Army Reserve in 1957, he became commissioned as a Regular Officer into the Coldstream Guards in 1964. After he was appointed Brigade major of 16 Parachute Brigade , he subsequently commanded G Squadron 22 Special Air Service Regiment. He was Director Special Forces until he assumed command of North East District and 2nd Infantry Division in September 1989. in 1993 Gen. Was appointed Commander of the UK field Army, UK Land Forces and Inspector General Territorial Army. He was made Commander in the Legion d' Honneur by President Chirac in October 1995. he retired from the Army in September 1997.

He has, to his credit, delivered lectures on 'Peace-keeping and Leadership' to a wide variety of audiences around the world, including the Aspen Institute, Price Waterhouse, General Motors, Marconi, JP Morgan, Winterthur, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, The Council for Foreign Relations, and the National Press Club in Washington. His book about his experiences in Bosnia, Fighting for Peace', was published in Nov 1998 by Harvill Press London, and the paperback version was recently produced by Warner Books. Gen. Rose is currently writing a book on the generalship of George Washington. As well as writing articles for military and academic publications, General Rose has also been commissioned to write for a large number of UK national newspapers including the Times, Sunday Times and Telegraph. His television appearances include Panorama, Breakfast with Frost and Hardtalk. He is a director of a security-related company, Control Risks Group.
