State Minister of Defence Assumes Duties

The newly sworn State Minister of Defence, Hon Ruwan Wijewardene (MP) on Friday (11) morning assumed duties at his office in the Ministry of Defence, amid religious observances.    

Members of the Maha Sangha, led by Ven Banagala Upatissa Nayake Thero, Chief Sanghanayake of Japan and Ven Dr Kirinde Assaji Thero of Gangaramaya invoked blessings on the new office after a brief Anusasana (oration) by one of them. The brief ceremony began after lighting of the traditional oil lamp as soon as the day’s protagonist entered the office premises.

Flanked by Secretary Defence, Mr Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne, Commander of the Air Force, Air Mashal Gagan Bulathsinghala, Mr Ranjith Wijewardene, Chairman, Wijey Newspapers Ltd, Mrs Ruwan Wijewardene, family members, the new Minister placed his signature in a formal document to symbolically signify the acceptance of the office.

Minister Dr Harsha De Silva, Additional Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries and a gathering of MoD officials were present at the occasion.
