'Foxhill Green' to Launch Reforestation in Diyatalawa Mountain Range

The popular mountain range, ‘Nariya Kanda’ alias ‘Foxhill’ that surrounds the Diyatalawa garrison city in the hill country is to be turned more greener with initiatives, taken by the troops serving the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C).

The iconic mountain valley, famous for the annual ‘Foxhill Supercross’, the premier motocross event in Sri Lanka as well as for various other public events, continues to be polluted as hundreds of people and sightseers are used to visit this area, many of them using vehicles with 4 wheels and other heavy ones.

The ecological balance as well as natural and rare species of flora and fauna has been badly affected and poses environmental threats as the area remains open to the public continuously.

SFHQ-C having understood the negative impact fast developing has now introduced a complete reforestation project with the support of state agencies, school children, tri-service personnel after launching a mammoth ‘Foxhill Green’ walk on July 24 (Friday) from the town centre to the ‘Foxhill’ mountain range.

SFHQ-C on the directions of its Commander, Major General Sumedha Perera, has identified a worst affected area of 3.75 acres for reforestation covering from 13 places where fruit and other crops can be planted.

Under the first phase, 1000 indigenous and fruit plants will be planted in the range with the participation of around 500 environment concerned people.
