24th Death Anniversary of 'Hasalaka Gamini' Held with Floral Tributes


The 24th Death Anniversary of Corporal Gamini Kularathne of 6th Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment(SLSR), known to the general public as ‘Hasalaka Gamini’ who made the supreme sacrifice to save his comrades from the siege at Elephant Pass Camp, took place on Tuesday(14) at a ceremony, held at Hasalaka Gamini Memorial at Elephant Pass.

Major General A.P. de Z Wickramaratne, General Officer Commanding, 66 Division graced the occasion as the Chief Guest for the ceremony.

Placing a floral wreath at the memorial, Major General Wickramaratne paid his tribute to the fallen war hero who is a symbol of true bravery and courage.

Brigadier C.D. Weerasooriya, Commander, 663 Brigade, Clolnel G.D. Sooriyabandara, Commander, 662 Brigade, senior officers and other ranks attended the event.

On 14 July 1991, Corporal Gamini Kularathne, then Lance Corporal, lobbied a grenade against an LTTE’s explosive laden bulldozer which was attempting to ram the Elephant Pass Army Camp, preventing the enemy’s entry into the camp. He was killed in the explosion ensued but the camp remained unaffected gunshots.

His act of bravery was immortalized and was awarded the ‘Parama Weera Vibhushanaya’, (PWV) the highest military decoration a military person could receive.
