ICRC Delegation Provides Update on ICRC Involvements in Sri Lanka


A three-member delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with the aim of providing a brief update on the ICRC’s ongoing and foreseen humanitarian undertakings in Sri Lanka for the year 2015, had  a courtesy call on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva Friday (27) afternoon.

Ms Cherine Pollini, Head of Delegation, Mr Lioyd Gilleti, Regional Armed and Security Forces delegate and Mr Channa Jayawardene, ICRC Communication Officer during their discussion with the Commander of the Army, explained the series of new rules and conventions that govern the ICRC in the new world order, particularly when it relates to the education on law of the armed forces in training programmes.

Head of the Delegation further gave a summary of humanitarian undertakings that are being carried out in Sri Lanka at present and the impact such programmes have brought about on the society at large.

Lieutenant General De Silva in response spelt out the series of routine training programmes underway in the Army, covering areas of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights as part of the syllabus in the officers’ training curriculum.

He further requested the ICRC to explore possibilities of providing more exposure to senior Army officers on the ICRC mandate and changing ICRC roles at overseas level in the future at a time the ICRC services are much more sought than ever before in different conflict scenarios.

Acknowledging the ICRC’s continuing invaluable roles and services with profuse thanks, the Commander presented mementos to the visiting ICRC representatives as tokens of goodwill.

Brigadier Aruna Jayasekara, Director Training, Sri Lanka Army was also associated with the meeting.
