Commander Speaks to Army Retirees in East


Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army during his visit to Kalkudah for the opening of the new ‘Laya Waves’ Hotel, took time off on Monday (5) to meet a cross section of the retired Army personnel, now resident in Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts in the East.

During his interactive meeting at Manampitiya ‘Prathibha’ hall, Polonnaruwa, the Commander made a speech and explained them the series of new welfare measures that have been effected in the Army for the best interests of retired Army personnel whose experience and knowledge is to be used for the development of the country as well as their own selves in the future. 

He also mentioned their new opportunities are available for vocational training in Army Training Schools, for those expecting to retire from the service on completion of their tenure. Infrastructure in existing training schools as well as in Army Industry centres have been widened or are being established. So that retirees could still opt for a new career before their retirement.

Similarly, establishment of new veterans’ homes are being done in every province, where those retired servicemen could seek accommodation if the retirees become lonely after death of their spouses or relatives.

Lieutenant General Ratnayake also gave a patient hearing to their grievances and concerns when they were requested to air their views before the departure of the Commander.

The retirees assembled at Manampitiya ‘Pratibha’ hall, Polonnaruwa under the Army’s ongoing ‘Healthy Army, Healthy Nation’ project of the Directorate of Medical Service had the rare opportunity of meeting medical consultants and eye surgeons who prescribed medicine and other consultations to those retirees after examining each of them.

In addition, a team of senior officers from the Directorate of Welfare, Directorate of Pay and Records, Directorate of Veterans’ Affairs and Directorate of Personnel Administration met those retirees with a view to resolving any issues related to their pension payments, loans, administrative problems, etc.

Major General Lal Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), senior officers and organizers of the ‘Healthy Army - Healthy Nation’ project including Brigadier A.S.M Wijewardane, were present during the project that has been launched on the direction of the Commander of the Army.
