Army Initiative with 'Starkey Hearing Foundation' Gives Hearing Aids to North-East Civilians &;amp; Army Families


The Army-initiated project for supply of hearing aids to the members of Army families and civilians of the North and East that got underway in Colombo with sponsorship, generously provided by ‘Starkey Hearing Foundation’ of the US in collaboration with the ‘SYNERGEN Health (Pvt) Ltd’, entered its third day on Monday (17) with another stock of hearing aids, distributed in the presence of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake.

With the blessings of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, the Sri Lanka Army with the support of the Directorate of Army Medical Services at first, conducted a survey in the organization and a separate screening in the North and East, a few months ago, to ascertain the numbers in urgent need of those expensive hearing aids, each worth about Rs 75,000/=.

‘Starkey Hearing Foundation’ after those segments of recipients, was screened and their hearing aids were moulded to match their specimens in previous projects, succeeded in supplying them with more than 3000 hearing aids that could be disseminated among beneficiaries free of charge.

On Monday (17), all arrangements were in place to have those hearing aids, fixed and delivered to the recipients in the presence of a team of experts from the US donors and a medical team, dispatched by the Directorate of Army Medical Services.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake after visiting the Sri Lanka Air Force ground where the project has been on since Saturday (15), spoke to the sponsors and thanked them for their generosity and concern.  

Earlier, ‘Starkey Hearing Foundation’ screened deserving people from Jaffna, Mullaittivu, Kilinochchi, Wanni and Colombo, all of who were facilitated by the Army through transport arrangements. Under the programme 2000 civilians and 1000 Army personnel were benefitted.
 
Dr Bill Austin of the ‘Starkey Hearing Foundation’ appreciating the support given by the Army, presented a token to the visiting Commander at the occasion.
