Army Troops Assist Funeral Arrangements after Helping the Police Arrest Gunmen

Sri Lanka Army troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN), offered all possible assistance to the bereaved family members of the slain, Sabharatnam Naguleshwaran, an ex-combatant at Wellankulam, Manthai West, following a request, made to the troops by close relatives of the family and his associates after their relative was gunned down on Wednesday (12) around 8.30 p.m.

Special Police teams, assisted by Army troops surrounded the area immediately after the shooting and the subsequent search operation resulted in the recovery of a T-56 weapon, believed to have been used by the assassin from a nearby thicket, about 350 m away from the incident, the following day (13).

Sniffer dogs of the Police and the Army tracked scent and trails from the location of the weapon to a house of a suspect in Ganeshapuram village and that led the Police to arrest a group of four suspects.

Police however maintain that the murder of the ex-combatant, who was living with his family, was most possibly due to an argument that ensued with those suspects a few days ago over acquisition of a cultivable land in the area.

At the time of the crime, the victim was producing cement blocks for construction of his house with two other relatives at the same venue when the gunman, said to have been a past comrade of his, shot at him. Head injuries due to shooting caused his death instantly before he was moved to the nearby hospital.

SFHQ-KLN troops at their request provided meals, refreshments, tents, transportation of the remains from Anuradhapura after the post-mortem and prepared the funeral site, showing goodwill of the Army towards the family.
