Major General Rajaguru, New DGI in Upgraded Infantry PSO Branch

 

Major General L.W.C.B.B Rajaguru has ceremonially assumed duties as Director General Infantry at a ceremony, held in the new office amidst Pirith charting of Maha Sanga led by incumbent of Utharachethiyarama Ven Kaduruwe Sugathawansa Thero.

Commander of the Army has upgraded Infantry from a Directorate to a PSO Branch effective from 22 Aug 2014.

Major General Chandana Ragajuru led the Infantry Directorate for over three and a half years and during the period, he implemented Battalion Training rounds for all Regiments of Infantry and training of other Regimental Battalions in Infantry Role.

He also facilitated the continuation of Special Infantry operative training courses which did a tremendous service during Humanitarian Operations. His Directorate was responsible for the coordination of Infantry and captured weapon exhibitions, in addition to the assistance rendered to Infantry in evaluations, formulating policies, doctrine research and development.

As per Army Commander’s vision, the Director General Infantry has been assigned to transform Infantry into a modernized combat element. Infantry presently comprises of 120 Battalions under Six Regiments and is added with 48 other Regimental Battalions in Infantry role which constitute for over 60 percent of the Army strength.

Major General Rajaguru has joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1980 in Officer Cadet Intake 13 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in July 1981 to the First Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment. He has held all Command appointments of Platoon, Company, Battalion Commander and Staff Appointments as Adjutant, OTO and Second in Command in 1, 4 & 6 Battalions of Sinha Regiment. He has been a Brigade Commander thrice, namely 522, 211 and 563 Bdes, and overlooked duties as GOC 56 Division. He has held all Staff Appointments as Grade III at AHQ, Grade II at then 11 Bde , Grade I at then 1 Div and as Colonel GS at 51 Div.

Further, he has been an Instructor at Combat Training School at its inception, and  later became Commandant from 2000 – 2002.  He has also been the Centre Commandant Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment. He was Principal Staff Officer at Headquarters Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and during Humanitarian Operations voluntarily, joined Civil Security Dept. As its Director Operations, his preview was well-achieved by effectively protecting the threatened border villages. During Humanitarian Operations, he served as Commandant of the Government-built Transit Camp, Habarana.

In 2010, he was appointed Security Force Commander-Kilinochchi and facilitated accelerated resettlement and Government Rehabilitation process. Whilst being transferred out as Director General Infantry, he on a duel role held the appointment of Commissioner General Rehabilitation, facilitating Rehabilitation and Reintegration of thousands of Ex Combatants.
