SLA's Sporting Pride, 'Gunner Supercross - 2014' Held with Massive Crowds


Sri Lanka Artillery’s pet project, ‘Gunner Supercross - 2014’ motor racing event at Minneriya Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) track, got underway on Sunday (3), amid a huge gathering of spectators and well-known drivers and riders.

The exciting event, the pride of the Regiment of SLA was held for the 9th consecutive year with a crowd of more than 25,000-30,000.

Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, First Lady as a spectator watched the races together with Air Marshal K.A Gunatilleke, Commander of the Air Force as the Chief Guest and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army as the Guest of Honour, flanked by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit and many senior officers and officers.

Major General J.C Rambukpotha, Colonel Commandant, SLA welcomed distinguished invitees before the inauguration of the day’s proceedings.

The mammoth motor racing event, competed by renowned motorcyclists and racing drivers included 20 events and Mr Aravinda Premadasa and Mr Nihal T. Adikari emerged as Best Driver and Best Rider respectively.

Mr Rohitha Rajapaksa was announced the winner in the Mini Car CC 1000 event and received the trophy from Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, First Lady amid applause.

Distribution of trophies and cash awards, some of which have been provided by donors with the cooperation of Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders was joined by the Chief Guest Air Marshal K.A Gunatilleke and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Guest of Honour.

Towards the end of the mega racing event, both Commander of the Air Force and Commander of the Army shared a couple of views with winners and other participants in various racing events.
