Advisory Committee on Army Rugby Founded for Revival


A friendly meeting that explored possibilities of further promoting Army Rugby with guidance and vast experiences of the veterans, took place Tuesday (3) evening at the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) mess hall, headed by Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake.

The cordial meet that summoned many rugby veterans who served the Army in the past either by coaching or playing in the team, founded the new Sri Lanka Army Rugby Football Advisory Committee at the request of the Commander of the Army who himself was a leading ruggerite many years ago.

Major General B.A Perera, Chairman, Army Rugby Committee received the Commander as he arrived at the venue before the formal welcome speech was made by him as Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Rugby Committee.

Later on, Major General Perera in his presentation to the attendees spoke of the Army Rugby history, current status, performances, achievements, setbacks, future plans and recruitment of players to the team.

Afterwards, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake in his capacity as the new Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Rugby Advisory Committee, spelt out his vision in detail for the future of Army Rugby.

Major General R.M.J.A Rathnayake, Director General Sports, Brigadier G.J.A.W Galagamage, Director Sports, Colonel W.A.P.M Wijesinghe, Vice Chairman, Colonel D.M.A.P Dissanayake, Secretary and all office bearers of the Sri Lanka Army Rugby Committee were present at the occasion.    
 
The occasion focused on future recruitment of both local and foreign players to the team, skill promotion programmes, employment of coaches and trainers, accommodation and training facilities, promotion of physical and mental wellbeing of players, readiness for the year 2014 / 15 Inter Club Rugby Season, development of women’s rugby and sponsorships, etc.

Major General (retd) H.M.N Krishnarathne, Major General (retd) M.Z.R Salley, Brigadier (retd) J.P.A Jayawardene, Brigadier (retd) R.A.S Ranasinghe, Colonel (retd) S.A Udugama, Captain (retd) D. Rathnayake and Captain (retd) S.P De Silva were accordingly appointed to the new Sri Lanka Army Rugby Football Advisory Committee, chaired by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake during the meeting.
