Jaffna Public Repeatedly Alerted to Mine Risk Areas During Programmes

Selecting most vulnerable 133 civilians, school teachers and children from Sorampatthu, Kevil, Vetthalaikerny, Aliyawalai, Nagarkovil East, Nagarkovil South, Udutthurai, Champianpaththu, Ittavil and Kilalay areas, in which de-mining has been going on since the completion of the war, the Security Force Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J) under its Disaster Mitigation Project, conducted two separate awareness programmes on ‘Risks of Land Mines and Unexploded Explosive Ordnance’ during the final week of March.

Organized by 10 Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), those sessions enlightened those present to be aware of the dangers as the de-mining is still on.

Meanwhile, groups of soldiers during the same period went from door to door, educating villagers. Nearly 960 children and 207 teachers and villagers learnt about mines and UXOs under the mobile programme of Army Engineers.

Sri Lanka Army de-miners as the most leading segment engaged in de-mining work have earned international recognition for their excellent work.
