Secretary Defence Mingles With 'Deyata Kirula' Visitors Before Visiting Army Exhibits

As massive crowds continue to throng Kuliyapitiya from all corners of the island to view exhibits at 'Deyata Kirula-2014' mega exhbition with extended dates, Police and Security Forces have been compelled to further strenghthen crowd-controlling measures on the site after implementing new ad hoc avenues inside for sight-seers as an alternative step to ease the congestion.

Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development earlier on Thursday (27) morning, called at the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development stalls, including the MoD Seva Vanitha cell at the site. Afterwards, Mr Rajapaksa, together with Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Commander of the Navy, Army Chief of Staff and several other senior officers, arrived at the Army complex.

On his way to the Army stalls and during morning hours, Mr Rajapaksa, took time off and freely moved about in the exhibition site, meeting all walks of life, visiting the site. He earnestly inquired from them on their opinion on the Exhibition and several other general matters of interest and concern to the public.  

At the entrance to the Army stalls, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army welcomed the visiting Secretary Defence, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa and ushered him, along with the Army Chief of Staff, Major General Crishantha de Silva.

Mr Rajapaksa at first was keen on viewing the stall that depicts historical growth of the Army and archives, reminiscing about his days in the Army as an officer many years ago. Afterwards, he eargerly watched exhibits on display at Army Commandos and Special Forces in the company of the Army Chief.

Army exhibits as in all previous years, with live acrobatic movements and other practical demonstrating shows, have become huge crowd-pullers and centres of popular attraction.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, explained to the visiting Secretary Defence, Mr Rajapaksa what have been put up by different segments of the Special Forces, Commandos, Artillery, etc, including the rare collection of historically-important Army photos and other visuals on display with special focus on Army-completed post-conflict mega eye-catching development projects.

Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit and Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit were also associated with the visit.
