Nepal's Chief of Army Staff to View Independence Day &;amp; Meet Secretary Defence

General Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, Chief of Army Staff of Nepal who arrived in Sri Lanka Saturday (1) evening, accompanied by his spouse and two more officers, at the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake during his six-day stay here, is scheduled to call on Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence  and Urban Development, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Navy and Air Force Commanders for formal meetings before he attends the 66th Independence Day ceremonies in Kegalle.

The delegation, headed by General Rana comprises Mrs Rohini Rana, Spouse of Nepal's Chief of Army Staff, Major General Rajendra Chhetri, Quarter Master General, Nepal Army and Major Gelong Lama, Assistant to Nepal's Chief of Army Staff, were greeted to a red-carpet welcome by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, together with his spouse, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Seva Vanitha Army Unit on arrival at the Colombo International Airport.

The visit, seen as a gesture for further promotion of existing relations and bonds of friendship that have been flourishing for generations as two Buddhism-dominated nations, is taking place in response to a formal invitation, extended to General  Rana by his Sri Lanka's counterpart.

The visiting General Rana with his delegation flies to Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on Sunday (2) and visits several places of interest, including Nallur Kovil in Jaffna after the Jaffna Commander, presents a briefing to him at the SFHQ-J, in relation to Jaffna's post-conflict revival and development, assisted by troops.
 
On Monday (3), General Rana as the Chief Guest is to deliver a special lecture to officer students at Sapugaskanda Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) while Mrs Rohini Rana, is expected to attend a separate programme, organized by the Seva Vanitha Army Unit.

He will call on Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence the same evening for formal discussions at the MoD where several important issues are expected to be taken up. That meeting follows a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff.

The itinerary reaches its apex at the Army Headquarters later in the same evening when he is to be accorded a Guard of Honour before he makes the formal visit to his host, Commander of the Army for interactions and formal discussions. Similarly, he will be exposed to a comprehensive briefing, presented by Directorates of Operations and Training where he and his delegation would receive detailed information on Sri Lanka Army's ongoing training sessions and exercises.

On Independence Day, General Rana as a distinguished guest of the Sri Lanka Army, perhaps for the first time in his life, is to view the 66th Independence Day celebrations at Kegalle, in the company of his host and others.

During his stay, the Nepal's Chief of Army Staff is to visit Sri Dalada Maligawa at Kandy, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and a few other places of interest. Prior to his departure, he will pay courtesy calls on Navy and Air Force Commanders.

GENERAL GAURAV SHUMSHER JUNG BAHADUR RANA

General Rana, son of late Major General Aditya SJB Rana and Rani Sunita Rana, was born on 12 December, 1955. He followed the footsteps of his father, into the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, United Kingdom in 1973 and was commissioned into Purano Gorakh Battalion in 1974.
 
General Rana is an alumnus of the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, USA and the National Defence University, Pakistan. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in History from Tribhuvan University and Masters Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Quaid-E-Azam University of Pakistan.
 
He has commanded Shree Taradal Gulma (Independent Infantry Company) and Shree Purano Gorakh Battalion. A second-generation officer of Purano Gorakh Battalion, one of the oldest units of the Nepalese Army and a battalion of ethnic Magars, he led this unit to UN Peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL in 1994.
 
He has served as Commandant of the Nepalese Military Academy, Kharipati. His notable active operational commands include Brigade Commander in 5th and 9th Infantry Brigades in counter insurgency environment in far western and central Nepal respectively. He commanded the Western Division, which is headquartered in Pokhara.
 
His important Staff appointments at the Army Headquarters include Chief of General Staff, Chief of Staff, Director General of Military Operations, Inspector General, Director of Recruitment, Director of Logistics and Director of Army Research and Development. In his capacity as the Director General of Military Operations, during the Koshi floods of 2008, he represented the Nepalese Army in the Central Natural Disaster Relief Committee and was the general officer in charge of rescue and relief operations.
 
He was promoted to the rank of General and took up his current appointment as Chief of the Army Staff on 9 September, 2012.
 
General Rana has been recently decorated with the prestigious Sukirtimaya Rastra Deep Honour in recognition of his outstanding contribution as Chief of the Army Staff. His other decorations, medals and insignias include Suprabal Jana Sewa Shree, Tri Shakti Patta, Disaster Rescue Award, UN Service Medal with Bar, Remote Area Service Medal (Service at the High Himalayas) and Parachutist Wing.
 
An ardent student of military history, a keen golfer, an avid bird watcher and an enthusiastic mountain biker, he has a reputation of having firm commitment towards his profession and the institution. He is the Colonel Commandant of Purano Gorakh Battalion, the battalion his father and he himself commanded.
 
General Rana is married to Mrs Rohni Rana and the couple is blessed with two daughters, two grandsons and one granddaughter.
