Commander Makes a Surprise Visit to the SLLI War Memorial &;amp; Sports Complex Under Construction

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army on Friday (31) morning, made a surprise visit to the construction site of the proposed Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) Sports Complex and the SLLI War Memorial at Panagoda. 

During his visit to the place, the Commander made inquiries into various aspects of the Sports Complex which expects to house facilities for Squash, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Hockey and Tennis, etc and the new pavillion, auditorium, gymnasium, two VIP cubicles, control rooms, cafeterias, changing rooms and all other wings, needed for a state-of-the-art construction of international standards.

After talking to Army and out sourced construction experts working there, Lieutenant General Ratnayake gave some directions and exchanged a couple of views with them. So did he when he had a look at the SLLI monument under construction around the same premises at Panagoda.              

The new sports complex, to be completed at a cost of about Rs 1105 million is to be built under three phases with the express and sole objective of bringing Army sports to the best standards, enabling sportsmen to compete in international events.

In the first phase drains, athletic ground, pavilions, a five-storied accommodation building, a three storied accommodation building, a three-storied headquarter building, sewage disposal system, archery, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts are to be facilitated.

Under the second phase, hockey ground, rugby, football ground and sport auditorium are to be constructed in the same complex.

In the final phase, internal road networks, jogging tracks, landscaping, outdoor lighting, car park, water reservation and connecting bridges are to be erected, bringing the project to completion.
