Pakistan's Army Chief Arrives to Attend PoP at Diyatalawa Military Academy

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, the four-star General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, at the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart, arrived in Sri Lanka Thursday (27) afternoon, amidst beating of Magul Bera (auspicious drums) and greetings to grace as Chief Guest at Diyatalawa Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) Passing out Parade (PoP) on Saturday (29).

A ceremonial reception, coloured by traditional dancers, greeted the visiting Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Parvez Kayani, Mrs Begum Zahida Kayani and the delegation at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.

His newly promoted Sri Lankan counterpart, General Jagath Jayasuriya warmly received the visiting General Kayani and the delegation while Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, Chairperson, Seva Vanitha Army Branch welcomed Mrs Begum Zahida Kayani at the airport. General Kayani initialed the VIP book at the airport as a token of formality before his exit from the airport.

On arrival at the Ministry of Defence grounds, Major General Daya Ratnayake, Chief of Staff received him warmly, strengthening bonds of goodwill prevailing between both organizations.  

General Kayani during his stay in Sri Lanka is scheduled to call on Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Commander of the Army, General Jagath Jayasuriya for brief discussions.

General Kayani who has been a close friend of the Army earlier in January 2011 visited Sri Lanka and met HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff, Commanders of the Army, Navy and the Air Force for cordial discussions. This is the first time he will be attending a PoP at Diyatalawa.

General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani NI (M), HI was commissioned from Paksitan Military Academy, Kakul in Baloch Regiment in 1971. General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani NI (M), HI, is a graduate of Fort Benning (USA), Command and Staff College Quetta, Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth (USA), Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies, Hawaii (USA), and National Defence College Islamabad.

The General possesses wide ranging experience in Command, Instructional and Staff appointments. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion, Infantry Brigade, Infantry Division and a Corps. He has been on the faculty of School of Infantry and Tactics Quetta., Officer Training School Mangla, Command and Staff College Quetta and National Defence University, Islamabad.

Besides being Chief of Staff Corps, the General has also held the coveted appointment of Director General Military Operations. He has served as Director General Inter Services Intelligence. He has been awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz and Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) for his meritorious services.

Imbued with the qualities of head and heart, General is perceived to be a purposeful and pragmatic Commander and embodiment of professionalism. Excellence and perfection remain the hallmark of his personality. He is an avid golfer and a keen sportsman. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
