Gale-force winds on Saturday (5) midnight blew down more than 350 houses in Haldummulla Divisional Secretariat area in Haputale, causing panic and loss to civilians.
After 112 Brigade troops serving the Security Forces Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) were alerted to the disaster at midnight, more than 75 troops rushed to the affected area and conducted relief operations with the support of those civilians.
10 of those houses needed complete rebuilding and more than 325 remain fully or partly damaged. Troops at the first light on Sunday (6) brought equipment, raw materials and accessories for repairs and reconstruction. With the support of state agencies, the troops are currently engaged in restoration work in the affected area.
