Wanni Students Encouraged to Learn English Donating Dictionaries

Expanding its humanitarian roles further and promoting English linguistic skills of students in 611 Brigade area, a stock of English – Tamil dictionaries to the value of Rs. 230,560.00 were distributed among 176 students, together with six scholarships during a ceremony at Vavuniya Sundarapuram Saraswathi Vidyalaya on Sunday (16).

Initiatives of the 61 Division and 611 Brigade Headquarters under the Security Forces Headquarters – Wanni (SFHQ-W) saw the US based Mr. V. Rathnathikam sponsor the cost of the entire purchase of those dictionaries at the request of the Army officers.

611 Brigade Headquarters earlier too donated such dictionaries to 250 students with the intention of improving English as a link language to promote better understanding among different ethnicities through proper communication. On the same lines of thinking, 611 Brigade Headquarters continues its English language teaching programme for the benefit of students in the area.

Sponsorship for six scholarships was made available by Mr. S. Amurdika, resident in Canada. On previous occasions, 23 more poor students in the area were made to receive these scholarships by the 611 Brigade Headquarters with grants received from local and foreign donors.   
          

The ceremony for distribution was attended by Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, SFHQ (W), Brigadier A.K.P. Wickremasingha, Brigadier General Staff – SFHQ-W, Brigadier A. Kariyakarawana, General Officer Commanding – 61 Division, Brigadier K.G.D. Perera, Commander, 611 Brigade and several others.       

A large gathering of students, parents, education authorities in Vavuniya attended the occasion.
