Commander Inspects 'Deyata Kirula - 2013' Site &;amp; Makes Unannounced Visit to Training School at Ampara

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army went to Ampara area on Monday (19) with a view to inspecting Army preparations underway at ‘Deyata Kirula - 2013’ mega development exhibition site and receiving an update on training at the Combat Training School (CTS), Ampara.

During the tour, the Commander, accompanied by Major General Lal Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E) and a few more senior officers, explored possibilities of staging Army exhibits this time with a novel approach, highlighting the Army’s post-war reconciliation, development and community-oriented roles in the North and East. He gave necessary instructions to the authorities to block out the 20 acre land allocation for the Army, keeping the importance of present responsibilities in mind at island-wide commitments of the Army.

In a surprise move, the Commander, a few minutes, prior to the visit to the ‘Deyata Kirula’ site, made an unannounced visit to the CTS Monday (19) forenoon and took time off to closely supervise ongoing training programmes and available facilities for Army Drill Instructors (DIs).

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya upon sudden observation of some partly discoloured uniforms of the trainees due to heaty weather instructed the authorities to immediately get them with extra sets after getting new ones from surplus stocks at the Army clothing depot, Veyangoda since the Commander himself during a very recent tour to the depot, saw how those additional stocks were lying idle at the warehouse.

The Army Chief, in an unusual gesture of supervision, at the same time, hurried to the dining table at the mess hall of other ranks, tasted meals (lunch) and attentively inspected the high quality of the meals which have now been prepared adding more nutrients to the menu who are often compelled to undergo intensive training sessions during daytime. The Commander’s warm approach and his interaction with lower ranks of the Army came in for praise and the trainees used the opportunity to the maximum, perhaps unprecedented during their career.

On the same occasion the Commander instructed the authorities to further raise standards of the facilities being provided to the training inmates.

During the day’s itinerary, the Commander at the request of the Commander, SFHQ-E at Welikanda attended another welfare project and took part in the ceremonial opening of the new Mess Hall of other ranks serving the SFHQ-E.

The spacious modern construction with a capacity to house more than 400 at one time was constructed by the SFHQ-E troops, including those from the Engineer Service Regiment (ESR).

Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest ceremonially opened this long-felt need of the soldiers, cutting a ribbon at the invitation of the East Commander.

The visiting Army Chief on entry into the new premises had a thorough look around and inquired about quality of the raw materials, used for the building before the Commander shared a couple of views with soldiers who were present at the location. He later on joined the soldiers for refreshments in the company of officers.

They presented a hurriedly organized memento to their Chief before his departure.
