Puthukkudiyirippu Karate Tournament Produces A New Set of Champions


A Karate tournament, organized by Puthukkudiyirippu-based 68 Division Headquarters for all ranks recently got underway at the 683 Brigade indoor stadium with the participation of a large gathering.

Troops of the 11 Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) serving under the 68 Division took initiative in this connection on the directions given by Major General K.J. Wijethillake, General Officer Commanding, 68 Division.

Championship trophies in the first three slots were won by 2nd Lieutenant M.A.J Kumarasinghe (14 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), Corporal G.M.C Bandara (18 VIR) and Private K.M Chathuranga (29 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) respectively.      

In addition, several soldiers and an officer won trophies under 50 kg, 55 kg, 60 kg, 70 kg weight categories in different events. Corporal G.M.C Bandara of 18 VIR was selected as the most professional Karate player in the entire tournament.

In the group events under the open category sector, soldiers of 14 VIR, 18 VIR, 29 SLNG, 5 Sri Lanka Signal Corps and 11 SLA showed their colours and took away trophies.

Mr N Wedanayagam, District Secretary for Mullaittivu and Mr S Jayakanthan, Divisional Secretary for Puthukkudiyirippu graced the occasion as Chief Guests. Many senior officers of the 68 Division and 682 Brigade participated in the final ceremony for award of trophies.
