Anniversary's Religious Segment Culminates with Pirith Chanting &;amp; Alms Giving

An all-night Pirith chanting ceremony at Panagoda Sri Bodhi Rajaramaya (Army temple) Friday (5) evening, led by Ven Dr Ittepaane Sri Dhammalankara Anunayaka Thero of Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha, invoked blessings on the country, HE the President and forthcoming Sri Lanka Army’s 63rd Anniversary and Army Day (October 10).

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army at the invitation of the Army Buddhist Association attended the occasion as the Chief Guest in the company of a large gathering of senior officers and other ranks.

Soon after a colourful procession, comprised of dancers of the Army cultural troupe, conducted members of the Maha Sangha to the Dharmashalawa (preaching hall) at the temple, the Commander of the Army, in keeping with ancient traditions, offered the tray of betel (Dehetwattiya) to members of the Maha Sangha, seated in the Pirith Mandapaya, inviting them to commence chanting until the following morning (6).

Members of the Maha Sangha, attending the inaugural phase of the chanting on Friday (5) evening included Ven Dr Ittepaane Sri Dhammalankara Anunayaka Thero, Ven Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayaka Thero, Ven Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thero, Ven Elle Gunawansa Nayaka Thero, Ven Bandarawela Amithananda Thero, Ven Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, Ven Dr Kirinde Assaji Thero, Ven Nawinne Sugunadhamma Thero and Ven Rambukwelle Sudhamma Thero, representing Ven Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thero, Sangha Nayaka of Colombo and Chilaw provinces.  

A special Anusasana (oration) delivered by Ven Dr Ittepaane Sri Dhammalankara Anunayaka Thero before the commencement of the chanting, praised the Army’s diverse roles and wished good luck with its onward march as defenders of the nation.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), Principal Staff Officers, senior officers, Chairman and office-bearers of Sri Lanka Army Buddhist Association and a large gathering of officers and other ranks, joined the Pinkama, organized to bless the anniversary.

A Heel Daana (breakfast) on Saturday (6) plus a Sangeeka Daana (alms giving) to 63 members of the Maha Sangha, the same noon culminates the series of religious ceremonies that commenced on October 1 in connection with the forthcoming 63rd Army Anniversary and Army Day (October 10).
 
Four bulls taken for slaughtering were also released on the same occasion before the alms giving.

Flag blessing ceremonies at Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya (October 1), Hindu Abhisekam Pooja at Sri Ponnambalam Vaneshwarar Kovil, Colombo 13 (October 2), Islamic prayers at Dawatagaha mosque and shrine (October 3) and Commemoration and Thanksgiving Service at All Saints Church, Borella (October 4), preceded Friday’s Pirith chanting and the alms-giving, the following day.
