Nagarkovil, one of the most widely-talked northern-most former LTTE hubs during the span of the entire war operations, which had remained badly infested with terrorist landmines and unexploded devices, has recently returned to complete normalcy with the Army’s de-mining role successfully over.
After completely de-mining the entire eastern sector of Nagarkovil, state administration with the active support of the Army resettled 171 families in this general area which was once a fierce battle ground. Of them, more than 40 families have pre-school kids who were compelled to learn their nursery rhymes under the shade of a colossal margosa tree at one remote end of Nagarkovil area until the Army came forward to help them out.
Directed by Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division, the troops of the 551 Brigade Headquarters joined hands with the soldiers of the 10 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) who are stationed in the area and put up a pre-school building near the same location within a couple of days.
The new building during a brief ceremony on Friday (20) was formally handed over to the teachers and kids at Nagarkovil in the presence of a gathering of invitees.
Towards the end of the day’s opening, gift parcels containing school books, accessories and confectionaries were also distributed among all those 40 kids as tokens of goodwill and harmony.

Jesuratnam, Pastor, Championpattu Saint Philips Neris Church, state officials including the Administrative Officer at Vadamarachchi (east) Divisional Secretariat, Principal, Nagarkovil Vidyalaya, Brigadier B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division, 551 Brigade Commander, 551 Brigade Civil Affairs Coordinator , Grama Seva officials, parents and some civilians in the area attended the occasion.
