SLAGSC Records a Landslide Win as Viru Daru Society's Maiden Sports Festival Ends on Grand Scale


Curtains came down on the maiden Army ‘Viru Daru - 2011’ (Children of War Heroes) Sports festival at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium on Saturday (12) evening, amidst shining hopes and cheering.     

Attaching a phenomenal importance to the first-ever sports meet, exclusively meant for children of War Heroes under the newly-founded umbrella organization, Army Viru Daru Society, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest attended both inaugural and closing ceremonies of the three-day long sports event that began on Thursday (10).

Organized jointly by the Viru Daru Society and the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps under the able guidance of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), the pioneer behind the founding of the first-ever Viru Daru Society in the Army’s history, the Viru Daru - 2011 Sports Meet had a large collection of track and field events, closely contested by hundreds of children of Army families, who are members of the Viru Daru Society.

The final victors received their merit awards from the Commander of the Army and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB. The overall championship of the meet was clinched by the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) Viru Daru Society and the runners-up were the members of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Viru Daru Society. The third place went to the Viru Daru Society of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI). The youngster Dhanushka Milan of the SLAGSC Viru Daru Society was adjudged the best sportsman while the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) Viru Daru Society member Anjali Weerasuriya won the trophy for the best sportswoman in the Meet.    

Seconds after the arrival of the Chief Guest on Saturday (12), the final Track and Field events took place amidst big rounds of applause and cheering.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, in his brief address to the occasion, admired the organizational capability of the new organization, depicted through their sports talents. Giving a piece of advice, the Commander, highlighted the importance of working, together with all for a common goal under an umbrella organization of this nature, and urged the youngsters to work harder for the promotion of leadership qualities in the future.

Following the vote of thanks, the ceremony came to a close with the concluding declaration made by the Commander of the Army who was the Chief Guest.

Symbolic of the official conclusion of the event, the Viru Daru - 2012 flag was afterwards handed over to the hosting Regiment in the year 2012, Gamunu Watch. As dusk fell, a display of fireworks glittered the skies.
