Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army who has thrown his full weight behind a multitude of welfare measures for the benefit of War Heroes, contributed to another worthy cause on Tuesday (4) morning by gifting a new house in Divulapitiya area to another disable War Hero, built with the funds generated by the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB).
Generosity of the philanthropist, Ms Pathma Jayawardena in donating a land of 39 perches of high value in the suburbs of the commercial hub, Divulapitiya to the welfare of disable Army War Heroes, came in for personal praise of the Army Commander who quipped, ‘a gesture rare and unprecedented’ since her magnanimous thought itself was worth more than the actual high value of the land.
Sergeant W.R Sampath of 4 Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) turned completely disable after he sustained serious injuries in a terrorist RPG attack during Humanitarian Operations and lost one of his hands.
Ms Pathma Jayawardena, conscious of gruesome experience in the battlefield donated this plot of land in Barabawila, Kajugaslanda, Divulapitiya to the War Hero, as a recognition of the War Hero’s sacrifice for the sake of the country. The SVAB, headed by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya after partitioning the 39 perch plot into two blocks constructed the Sergeant W.R Sampath’s house at a cost of Rs 1 million.
After this offer was intimated to the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who is also the Colonel of the SLAC Regiment, instructed the SVAB to explore possibilities of erecting two new houses on behalf of two disable War Heroes at the same occasion. Accordingly, the SVAB is in the process of building one more new house, adjacent to Sergeant Sampath’s to Private Nuwan Kumara of SLAC, one more disable soldier on the supervision of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya.
Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB after offering her motherly care and concern towards the cause immediately initiated the house construction project for Sergeant Sampath with an initial donation of Rs 1 lakh as the first instalment on 4 November 2010. Later on, the SVAB, within a matter of several months, gifted Rs 9 lakhs more for completion of the construction on staggered basis.
Realizing the value of the project, fellow-other ranks of the SLAC joined together and offered their labour to a worthwhile project and saw the new house completed within a matter of 9 months with the blessings of the SVAB.
Tuesday’s (4) house warming ceremony at Divulapitiya commenced after the recipient’s two daughters received the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on the occasion in accordance with traditions.
As the auspicious moment struck on Tuesday (4), the Commander, at the invitation of Mrs Jayasuriya, President SVAB, unveiled a plaque and cut a ribbon to ceremonially open the new house, accompanied by the recipient, Sergeant Sampath and the donor, Ms Jayawardena. Members of the Maha Sangha invoked blessings on the ceremonial house warming and conducted religious observances.
Ms Jayawardena in a brief address to the occasion spoke high of the sacrifices made by tri-service personnel in the name of the country and vowed to extend her further help for projects of this nature in the future too.
