Army 'Viru Daruwo' Join Together Under 'Viru Daru' Organization

With the noble objective of providing solace and support to overcome traumatic experience, children (10-23) of Army families were to be brought under the umbrella, ‘Viru Daru’ Organization, on a concept, mooted by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB).

The ceremonial induction of the ‘Viru Daru’ children’s organization in the Army, designed to realize immense potential in children of Army families got underway Saturday (24) evening at Colombo Defence School auditorium with the participation of Mrs Cybil Wettasinghe, Veteran Editor of Children’s Books as the Chief Guest and a host of other distinguished invitees as Guests of Honour, including Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralidaran, Ajantha Mendis, Hon Namal Rajapaksa, Member of Parliament (MP), et al.

The day’s ceremony got to a start after a team of ‘Viru Daru’ children rent the air with the ‘Viru Daru’ theme song soon after the traditional auspicious oil lamp lighting and observance of a 2-minute silence to honour fallen War Heroes took place.

The Chief Guest Mrs Wettasinghe spoke to the budding ‘Viru Daru’ children who are to be future members of the organization and commended them for their patience and sacrifices made on behalf of their father or mother who went to the battlefield some time back, but never returned home or saw him alive. 

The formal founding of the ‘Viru Daru’ organization proper, to be followed by inauguration of the ‘Viru Daru Fund’ adds special significance because a huge number of children of War Hero families still continue to suffer from traumatizing past memories and bitter experiences after having lived with the fear of losing their loved ones, mostly the father in the family during the 30-year war, the gathering was told.

The ceremonial inauguration of the ‘Viru Daru’ organization included award of scholarships, presentation of identity badges to office-bearers of the new organization, launching of the new ‘Viru Daru’ webpage, presentation of appreciative plaques and mementos, etc and was coloured by eye-catching dancing and singing features. Chairpersons of all Seva Vanitha Units in the Army attended the inaugural occasion as invitees.

The organization is to be initiated with the aim of creating an optimal environment for recognizing, developing and nurturing the strengths and talents of children, belonging to Army families.

Major General D.R.A.B. Jayatilake, Commander, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Forces, Mrs Otara Del Gunawardane, Mr Nisshanka Diddeniya, Mr Pramuditha Wickramasinghe, Mrs Jayanthi Daluwatte, Mrs Dilhani Weerasooriya, Mrs Gnana Balagalle, Mrs Sonia Kottegoda and several other invitees were among guests of honour.
