Mannar Residents Informed of False Rumours

A joint representation of religious leaders, Tri-services and Police personnel, state administration and local authorities in Mannar took steps on Wednesday (24) to alert the public to a series of anti-social and rumour-mongering programmes, being spread by certain interested parties on various hidden agendas.

The meeting organized on the instructions of the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ-W) at Perunnalasampiddi local council auditorium in Pesalai was attended by Brigadier M.A.M Dias, General Officer Commanding, 54 Division, Rear Admiral A.R Amarasinghe, Northern Naval Commander, Colonel N Ramanayake, 542 Brigade Commander, Rev Winston Addappan, Chief Pastor at Pesalai St Victory Church, Ms De Mel Divisional Secretary for Pesalai, Rev A.H Aruz, Chief Moulavi at Erukkalampiddi Mosque, J.M Risafi, Local Council Deputy Chairman and a large gathering of Tamil and Muslim civilians.

The meeting went into details regarding a few violent incidents that occurred in the past few days and expressed the need to maintain law and order as well as communal harmony in the face of rumour-mongering, connected with an alleged presence of  a ‘grease devil’ in some Muslim-dominated areas.

Authorities of the Security Forces during the meeting explained the attendees of various machinations being set in motion by some disgruntled elements with the motive of destabilizing our peaceful co-existence. They also appealed to the public to keep the law enforcement authorities informed of all those suspicious elements in their areas.
